  • [es-pree de less-ka/-iay] (idiom) A witty remark that occurs to you too late, literally on the way down the stairs. The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations defines esprit de l'escalier as, "An untranslatable phrase, the meaning of which is that one only thinks on one's way downstairs of the smart retort one might have made in the drawing room."

Diner coffee!!! MMMMMMMMM!

but I panicked when the waitress asked

How funny, Claire. But, I know *just* what you mean. Don't you hate when you start panicking over dumb little everyday things? And all of a sudden you feel like you're not speaking clearly and that everyone is watching?

Even though your pie wasn't perfect, how great that you got to be in that diner. Really, really cool!

Last time I had dessert (strawberry rhubarb cobbler), the waitress asked if I wanted it warmed up & with ice cream, and I too panicked and said yes. Which was so unfortunate, because I really, really didn't. Ice cream is a bad, bad thing for me (so severely lactose intolerant).

Sorry the pie wasn't the best ever. Next time you're in Portland, we'll have pie at the Daily Bread. Yum.
